Sony has confirmed that its going to release its highly acclaimed PSP game Patapon 2 only in digital download in the United States instead of its UMD-disc format.

Those gamers who are interested in buying Patapon2 will also have to buy a box in which a downloading code has been given.

According to Patrick Seybold, an SCEA spokesperson, “Sony has been exploring the preferences of its consumers for the digital content and viewing their interest we are looking going to release the Patapon 2 only in a digital format.

“These downloadable games will be made available at retail as well as through PlayStation Store from 5th of May. We have always been focusing to offer best possible gaming experiences to our customers in digital as well as UMD formats and now we have joint forces with our partners to provide the best possible line up of PSP in the history.”

This news has caused some further stir in the gaming industry showing that UMD’s death is quite near.

Some analysts are reckoning this move as the first shot in the coming days’ digital war. Though Sony seems quite near to develop a pure digital model of business, yet we can expect some tough fight back from the other players of the gaming world.

There are also rumors that the coming PSP model will be disc free and it will be available in downloads.
