office14As we all were expecting the release of new version of Microsoft office this year it’s been announced by CEO Steve Ballmer that the release of the vendor’s flagship suite won’t ship until2010 as told to financial analyst in New York.

Ballmer offered little explanation or context for the office 14 delay, although he told that the free Open Office suite had caused the company to lower the world wide price of the suite.

Why the delay? Microsoft isn’t talking but shipping the product in 2010 may make more sense than doing it in a recession prone year 2009.
Office 14 is the successor of Window 12, also known as Microsoft Office 2007.It was expected to be released in the first half 2009.

Earlier Microsoft said that a version with ads would be the solution to the problem of how to make money off the millions of people pirating its products. The next version of office will support the Open Document format.

Shipping the suite now may not improve Microsoft’s revenue scenario to a large extent as corporations will likely put off purchases as long as possible. So if the company ships office 14 and few people buy it at launch, it may be viewed as a failure and so lose curiosity.

So shipping in 2010 may make more economic sense. There’s no way to know whether that’s why the ship date is now officially 2010.
